Reading #2

Chapter 3
Introduction
Drawing is probably the key component for a designer, especially in the beginning of a project, because it allows the designer to immediately begin pulling what's in their head out into reality.

3.1 Thumbnails
Michel Bouvet is a guy who uses thumbnails as a means to quickly and effectively make posters by quick arrangement of signs, symbols, and typography.  He makes posters by usually reading the plays 3-4 times to fully grasp it’s concept and best decide how to make the poster without revealing the ending, yet keeping the image intriguing enough for people to come and see it. He then likes to make twenty or so thumbnails, later bringing it down to the best 3 to 4 to develop.   Take for instance, his table with a makeshift brick to stabilize a leg hat showcased the “absurd atmosphere” of the Oxu play.

He likes to have two or even three “levels” to his work just as many stories contain layers of symbolism. So his posters are often simple, yet he will put in details and concepts behind those simple images so people can continue to look closer and discover more with joy, like his Hamlet “H” poster.
